How we started our candy store- Making of The Chocolate Frog

Written by ken hohstadt. Posted in product review, Uncategorized, Waldport

I get asked on a daily basis why we named the store The Chocolate Frog. Is it a Harry Potter store is the most asked question and guess what we have nothing to do with Harry Potter what so ever. In fact how the store ended up with it’s strange and unique name is well let’s just go back a little. My wife and I were in Nevada on the way home from just getting married. We stopped at border town and found a adorable Golden Pond Tree frog. We decided that every year on our honeymoon we would find another frog to add to our collection.

golded pondWe were working together managing local organization here in Waldport, Oregon. We were talking about starting a business locally and wanted something unique. Funny enough this great coast town didn’t have a candy store.

Neither of us have had a candy store before so where to start? Well we started by checking out stores up and down the coast. Our idea of bringing something fun and different was closer than we knew.

This guy was the first item we purchase for the store over a year before we even came up with the business name. Our main focus was to be a rain forest themed shop. The rainforest “Don’t Say Goodbye” This great picture is now and always will be hanging on the wall for everyone to enjoy.

We spent a lot of time researching the perfect location for our little idea to come to light. At some point we would have to name our baby and after writing down a huge list of ideas my wife says it. The Chocolate Frog It was so perfect for what this little candy store is all about.  We also decided to try something that is not seen a lot on the coast. We price our items for the locals and not the tourism trade. This would help the local economy and help ensure any chance of us surviving the long winters.  We got very lucky and found a great little store that needed a little sweat or should I say sweet equity and bam! The Chocolate Frog was born on July 3rd 2014.

Just starting out we still don’t have everything we would like to offer but as time goes on our list of available products will grow. Currently we offer twenty nine flavors of salt water taffy and amazing old fashioned candy’s. Remember candy buttons or bubblegum cigars? They’re here along with several great imported items like German chocolates, jams and mustards. We also carry some of the most amazing hand made chocolates you have ever had. All made here on the Oregon coast. Sea Foam, salted caramels and fudge are just a few of the options available at The Chocolate Frog.

About Chocolate Covered Sunflower Seeds

Whether you choose the unadorned sunflower seeds or chocolate coated ones, these new snacks are fascinating.

History

The original chocolate sunflower seeds, called Sunny Seed Drops, are made by the Sunflower Food & Spice Company, based in Riverside, Missouri. They became popular in 2006 and are now available in plastic boxes in baby shower and holiday themes and also in large plastic tubes topped with sunflowers. They have caught the eye of both health food enthusiasts and those who follow the latest trends.

Nutritional Information

The average one ounce serving of chocolate covered sunflower seeds contains:
  • Two grams of fiber
  • Three grams of protein
  • Four percent of the RDA for both calcium and iron
  • Zero grams of trans fat
However, the chocolate and the candy coating add a fair amount of sugar, about 12 grams, so it is still healthier to eat the sunflower seeds without the extra adornment.

Where to Find

This snack is available at most health food stores, including the large chains Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Wild Oats. Many traditional grocery stores also carry it, especially ones that have natural foods or bulk foods sections. Other retailers to check are Cracker Barrel, Cost Plus World Market, Dean & Deluca and chain candy stores. Those that can’t find chocolate sunflower seeds locally can purchase them online. We offer them at The Chocolate Frog.

Promotional companies, such as ePromo offer them too, in containers festooned with company logos. Even wedding vendors are noticing their popularity, as there are favors available for order that include bags of seeds, boxes of seeds and even seeds with coordinating ribbons. A person can purchase seeds with coatings in most any color, ranging from white to pink to periwinkle to black. They are available in assortments or all as one solid color.

Making Them at Home

Those who don’t wish to buy the treats can attempt to make them at home. It’s best to skip the candy coating and just go with the chocolate to start.
  1. Put two cups of sunflowers seeds into a colander and rinse them thoroughly.
  2. Pour the seeds into a pan filled with two quarts of water and a quarter cup of salt.
  3. Leave the seeds in the water overnight.
  4. Pour the seeds back into the colander to drain. Then let them dry on a paper towel for one hour.
  5. Place them on a large baking sheet.
  6. Roast them in the oven at 300 degrees for half an hour.
  7. Melt a four ounce bag of chocolate chips in the microwave. Check it every minute and stir until soft.
  8. Dip the sunflower seeds in the chocolate. Then lay them on a sheet of wax paper.
  9. Refrigerate the seeds as soon as possible so the chocolate will harden quickly. They will be ready in about two hours.

Uses for Chocolate Sunflower Seeds

While many people love eating these sunflower seeds right out of the package, they are also good as ingredients in recipes. They can be used in most that call for traditional chocolate chips. For example, try them in:
  • Trail mix
  • Cookies
  • Brownies
  • Snack bars
  • Oatmeal
  • Pancakes
  • Yogurt
  • Breads
  • Ice cream
